The Flexitarian Diet is a flexible approach to vegetarianism. The term “Flexitarian” is a combination of “flexible” and “vegetarian”. While the primary focus is on consuming more plant-based foods and fewer animal products, followers of this diet aren’t required to completely eliminate meat. Instead, they aim to reduce meat consumption and increase the intake of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains.

Benefits:

  • Weight Loss: Lower calorie intake from plant-based foods can help with weight management.
  • Improved Health: Reducing meat consumption has been linked to a lower risk of heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and certain cancers.
  • Environmental Impact: Consuming less meat can reduce one’s carbon footprint, as meat production typically has a greater environmental impact compared to plant-based foods.
  • Flexibility: Unlike strict vegetarian or vegan diets, the Flexitarian diet allows for occasional meat consumption, making it easier for some people to adopt and maintain.

I tried the Flexitarian Diet, aiming to reduce meat consumption without cutting it out entirely and increase my intake of plant-based foods. While the concept seemed promising for a more sustainable lifestyle, I found it lacked clear guidelines, making it hard to balance properly and stick to. It gets two stars from me because, despite its flexibility and environmental benefits, the vagueness and lack of structure made it difficult to follow consistently.
